The Director of the US Patent and Trademark Office, Michelle Lee, met with San Diego business and political leaders last week. The purpose of her visit was to make patents and trademarks easier for innovators to register and protect. Intellectual property is a primary foundation for many San Diego businesses. The ability to register and protect your company’s logo, brand name, tagline, trademark, copyrighted material, content and videos, original works, designs and patent eligible ideas is an important legal and financial protection.
San Diego is one of the leading sources of patent applications in the United States, accounting for more than 5,000 applications annually. The broad spectrum of high-tech, bio-research, healthcare technology and military contractors supported by world-class universities has resulted in one of the most concentrated centers of creativity for intellectual property throughout the nation. The Watkins Firm has served the San Diego business community for decades and work with our clients to make patents and trademarks easier to obtain. We manage the process of applying for a patent, trademark or copyright including due diligence, the preparation and submission of the application. Submissions for intellectual property are highly complex and require precise and accurate formatting and substantial documentation.
We guide the application through the review and comment phase and respond to any inquiries or challenges that might arise. Once a patent, trademark or copyright has been issued you must protect it against infringement. Our attorneys work diligently to monitor the use of our client’s intellectual property. We manage cease and desist communications and any legal action required to protect your company’s intellectual property from infringement.
We welcome the Director’s visit and initiative, understanding the complexity of the task ahead. “We very much welcome all of your participation and all of your input,” said Lee, but acknowledged that the process will require much more work and creative input. “There will probably be a series of conversations,” she added.
